Proper Transmission Upkeep:
It's Important
All Transmissions are sensitive to dirt and any foreign matter. The best way to make it last is to take care of it. It's the old pay me now or pay me later thing. I'd rather pay for the upkeep than the repair. Follow this checklist and you may never need that expensive repair.
- Check the fluid level each month; it should be full and red.
- Change the fluid and filter every 25,000 miles.
- In hot weather, if your car over heats turn the heater on, it will use the heater water to help cool the engine and transmission. Heat is a primary enemy to transmission failure. Should your car over heat check the fluid to ensure it is still red, if it is not you should consider having the fluid changed.
- Should you have to drive slowly it might be wise to down shift to a lower gear to avoid continual shifting at low speeds.
- Do Not change the fluid without changing the filter also.
- Consider a complete transmission flush and filter change rather than just a fluid and filter change, it cost more but it's worth it.
- Conside using synthetic fluid, Ask you repair shop technician.
